Hoeller, Lizarazu Earn Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

Hoeller defended his title in the heptathlon at the Metropolitan Championships on Thursday and Friday. He sat in third place after the first day, but won all three events on day two to clinch the victory. Hoeller posted a time of 8.44 seconds, then moved into the lead after pole vaulting 4.60 m (15’1). He cemented the win with a 2:49.11 clocking in the 1000 meters. Hoeller won by just 82 points, finishing with a score of 5081.
Marina Lizarazu

Senior Marina Lizarazu has acted as a catalyst for the Iona College women’s basketball program over the course of the past two weeks. The preseason MAAC Player of the Year returned the starting lineup six games ago, and since then the Gaels have won every game. She has played 40 minutes in six straight games, and as of Monday, Feb. 6 she is now a three-time MAAC Player of the Week.In addition to being the MAAC Player of the Week three times, Lizarazu has once been named the College Sports Madness Player of the Week (11/24) and MBWA Player of the Week (1/24).
As of Monday, Feb. 6, Lizarazu ranks seventh the MAAC in scoring (14.7), first in assists (3.7), third in steals (2.5), fourth in free throw percentage (79.1%), eighth in three-point shooting percentage (36.6%) and fifth in minutes per game (35.0).
She has eight 20+ point games this season, leading the Maroon & Gold in scoring on 10 different occasions.
Iona currently sits second in the MAAC standings, trailing just Rider and Quinnipiac, who are tied for first place. The Gaels welcome the red-hot Rider Broncs to the Hynes Athletics this Friday night at 7 PM.
