Canisius Earns its Third Consecutive MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship

EDISON, NJ – Canisius College defeated Fairfield University, 15-10 to claim the 2017 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship. The Griffs improved to (12-4, 7-0 MAAC) with today’s victory.

For the third consecutive season the Griffs earn the MAAC Regular Season Title and the number one seed in the upcoming Championship. As the number one seed, Canisius hosts the 2017 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship, May 5-7, from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, NY. The Griffs have won the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship five out of the last six seasons (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).

Canisius’ junior midfield Erica Evans leads the MAAC in goals (60), points (83), and ground balls (57). The Peterborough, Ontario native was tied for second in the NCAA in goals scored heading into today’s contest. Evans is a three-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and earned NCAA Player of the Week honor on April 12.

Six Griffs have scored 20 or more goals this season to pace their league leading offense, which is also ranked as the sixth-highest scoring offense in the nation coming into today’s game. Evans is joined by Tessa Chad (44), Jen Reininger (36), Jourdan Roemer (31), Allie Stewart (26), and Ashley Bull (24) as the six Canisius players to score 20 or more goals this season.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken has earned 11 wins in net for Canisius this season. She is a two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week and has recorded 142 saves in 16 starts.

The Griffs are currently on a nine-game winning streak, which dates to March 8. They have won 22-straight MAAC games dating to 2014. Canisius has earned non-conference victories over Oregon, Binghamton, Delaware, Duquesne, and Michigan this season.
