2017 MAAC Softball Championship Field is Set

EDISON, NJ – The 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship field of play is set as the regular season concluded on Monday afternoon. Iona College is the No. 1 overall seed and serves as the host institution for the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship, which takes place May 10-14, from the Donald E. Walsh Field in New Rochelle, NY. Each game of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship will be streamed on either MAAC.TV or ESPN3.

The Gaels finished the regular season (26-20, 15-5 MAAC) to claim their first MAAC Regular Season title since 2011. Iona closed its conference slate (7-1) over its last eight games and won six-straight from April 23-April 30. The Gaels play their first game of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship on Thursday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. They face the winner of No. 4 Manhattan College and No. 5 Monmouth University.

No. 2 Siena College (21-28, 14-6 MAAC) also plays its first game of the Championship on Thursday, May 11. The Saints take on the winner of No. 3 Marist College and No. 6 Fairfield University at 9:00 a.m.

No. 3 Marist (33-20, 13-7 MAAC) faces No. 6 Fairfield (22-26, 11-9 MAAC) in the first game of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship on Wednesday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. The Red Foxes and Stags spilt their regular season meeting on April 8.

Marist took game one of the doubleheader, 4-1, behind senior pitcher Jayne Oberdorf. The senior tossed 5.0 innings, allowed one run, earned, on four hits. She struck out three and walked none in the win. Senior outfielder Janna Korak accounted for three of the Red Foxes' four runs on the day. She slugged a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to put Marist out in front, 4-1.

Fairfield came back to win game two of the series, 4-1. Sophomore pitcher Karisa Hughen pitched a complete game in the win and allowed one run, earned, on eight hits. She struck out two and walked two.

No. 4 Manhattan (33-19, 13-7 MAAC) goes head-to-head with No. 5 Monmouth (22-29, 11-9 MAAC) on Wednesday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Jaspers and Hawks also spilt their regular season matchup on April 3. Monmouth took the first game, 1-0, behind a complete game (8.0 innings) shutout by junior pitcher Amanda Riley. She surrendered five hits and struck out 12 en route to the victory.

Manhattan defeated Monmouth in the second game, 9-1. The Jaspers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on seven hits. Junior pitcher/infielder Briana Matazinsky tossed a complete game, allowed one run, earned, on six hits to pick up her ninth win of the season.

The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the Championship final taking place on Saturday, May 13 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser's bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the second and deciding game takes place at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m.
