IRELAND – The Iona College golf team is embarking to Ireland for the annual Iona-UCD Challenger's Cup.  The competitive event which pins the Maroon & Gold against the University College Dublin in match play will take place on three days at three separate courses.

The event kicks off on Monday, Aug. 14, at the Island Golf Club.  The next day tees off at Portmarnock Golf Club and the contest concludes on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Royal Dublin Golf Club.

Head Coach Sean Burke is grateful to all those who make this trip an experience possible: "I am excited to once again take our team on this wonderful trip.  This is so unique and special for Iona Golf and everyone affiliated with our program.   I can't thank our administration, supporters, and especially Jim Hynes enough for continuing to embrace this competition.  Our guys treasure the opportunity to compete against UCD on these world renowned tracks."

Deputy Director of Athletics Matt Glovaski, who has been part of this partnership and experience for multiple years, echoes the coach Burke on the impact this trip has.

"This trip is an incredible opportunity for members of our golf program and we are extremely grateful to be able to compete annually against UCD and its alumni. The camaraderie, competition and tradition involved in this unique experience will provide our student-athletes with memories that will last a lifetime."

"We are extremely thankful to all the Iona alumni and supporters that continue to support this trip and ensure that its legacy will live on."

Rising sophomore Matt Mirocco and rising junior Paolo Matti were highlight players for Iona, dominating as single players and teammates.  Last year UCD defeated Iona for the Challenger's Cup trophy 9.5 – 6.5, holding off a strong comeback attempt from the Gaels on the final day at Winged Foot.

Their organization and eagerness in making the occasion as special as it is allows for a continuously friendly competitive event.  The Challenger's Cup cannot happen without Brian Mullins and Bill Jolley of the UCD program.

On previewing the competition, Burke exclaims "We will give it our all in the effort to bring the Challenge Cup back to Iona!"
