Field Hockey All-MAAC Teams and Major Award Winners Announced

2018 MAAC Field Hockey Awards Show Banquet

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ
 – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced the 2018 Field Hockey All-MAAC Teams and major award winners. The conference award recipients were honored at the annual field hockey banquet this evening at Monmouth University.
 
Monmouth’s Georgia Garden Bachop was named the Field Hockey Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Garden Bachop is the second player in Monmouth and MAAC history to win both (Trish O’Dwyer, 2014). Garden Bachop leads the MAAC in points with 34, goals with 15 and game-winning goals with seven. The senior led the Hawks to a perfect 5-0 league record and has gone 21-2 over her career in the MAAC. The New Zealand native was the 2018 Preseason Co-Player of the Year and a 2017 All-MAAC selection. Garden Bachop is the third-straight Monmouth player to earn Player of the Year (Julie Laszlo, 2016).

Luzi Persiehl of Fairfield University is the MAAC Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year according to the leagues’ 11 head coaches. Persiehl assisted the Stags to the No. 3 seed and an 11-8, 3-2 record. The Hamburg, Germany native anchored a defense that allowed a league-low 28 goals and 1.47 per game. Fairfield was one-of-three squads with a positive margin in points (0.64). Persiehl is the second Stag to win MAAC Rookie of the Year since Ruth Smalbraak in 2015.

Lena Vandam of Rider University is the MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year. The 2017 MAAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and All-MAAC First Team goalie set career-highs in saves (114), wins (11) and a career-low in losses (7). Vandam is second in the league with four shutouts has allowed 1.4 goals per game in league play. The Broncs are the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Championship finishing the season 11-7, 4-1.

Carli Figlio of Monmouth is named the 2018 MAAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Coach Figlio led the Hawks to 11-6 overall record and a perfect conference record of 5-0 for the 2018 season. This is Coach Figlio’s ninth postseason appearance and the Hawks fifth-straight regular season title. This marks Figlio’s third MAAC Coach of the Year Award (2016, 2014).
