MADISON, WI – The Iona College cross country program had sophomore Egle Morenaite representing the Maroon & Gold at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship held at the University of Wisconsin.
The women's 6K race opened the day and Morenaite was the Gael representative having placed second individually at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo, NY the week prior.
Morenaite finished 28
th in the 6K race among the 253 individual competitors running on the snowy Saturday afternoon. She set a new personal best in a 6K race with a time of 20:28.5 and average mile time of 5:29.3. She crossed the 2K split in 6:42.1 and 4K split in 13:42.1. Morenaite moved up in the standing with each checkpoint.
Her 28
th place finish warrants All-American distinction. Athletes of member institutions who finished in the top-40 of their respective races at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships earned the honor.
Colorado won the team championship, beating out New Mexico and Oregon. Dani Jones of Colorado won the individual crown in 19:42.8. She bested New Mexico's Weini Kelati and Oregon's Jessica Hull.
During the 2018 cross country season, in addition to her 28
th place finish on Saturday, Morenaite won the 2018 Metro Atlantic Cross Country Championships and was named the MAAC Most Outstanding Runner. She finished 66
th in her first race of the season at the Nuttycombe Invitational before placing 12
th at the Penn State Nationals Open and second in the aforementioned NCAA Northeast Regional.
