EDISON, NJ – The 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Field Hockey Champions, Monmouth University (13-6), is set to face the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Champions, The College of William & Mary (11-7), in the opening round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship. The opening-round matchup is on Wednesday, November 7, at 1 p.m. at Busch Field in Williamsburg, VA.
MAAC Championship Recap: No. 1 Monmouth defeated No. 3 Fairfield University (12-8), 2-1 in West Long Branch, NJ at So Sweet A Cat Field for Monmouth’s third MAAC Championship Title. Monmouth clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Monmouth made its ninth overall appearance in a conference championship game. It is the Hawks' third-straight trip to the MAAC finals, fourth overall.
Monmouth Notes: The Hawks remained unbeaten at home this season (10-0). Georgia Garden Bachop leads the MAAC in points (37) and game-winning goals (7). Kelly Hanna is second in the MAAC with eight assists. Annick van Lange was tied for fifth in league with nine goals.
Fly Hawks: Senior forward and MAAC Player and Offensive Player of the Year, Georgia Garden Bachop was named the 2018 MAAC Field Hockey Championship Most Valuable Player. Ireen Frenken, Annick van Lange and Josephine van der Hoop were members of the 2018 MAAC All-Championship Team. Five Hawks were named All-MAAC, and Coach Carli Figlio was named BSN Sports MAAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year.
Head-to-Head: The Hawks are 0-2 all-time against William & Mary, falling in the most recent matchup last season, 2-1. The winner will advance to take on the number one overall seed University of North Carolina (19-0) on Friday, November 9th. William & Mary is hosting its first NCAA game.
MAAC and NCAA Postseason History: MAAC Field Hockey teams are 0-5 in NCAA Championship play dating back to 2013. This marks Monmouth’s third appearance; losing previously to UMass (4-3, 2016) and Princeton (4-3, 2014).
