EDISON, NJ – The Monmouth University Hawks (16-3-1) will face the No. 12 University of Virginia Cavaliers (15-4) in the First Round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in Charlottesville, VA at 7 p.m. on November 9. The Cavaliers lost in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament to Louisville, 3-1. Monmouth defeated Siena College (11-8-3), 7-1, in a record-breaking seven-goal game to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAAs. The winner of Monmouth/Virginia will play the winner of Texas Tech (13-5-2) and No. 21 Princeton (11-3-2).
Monmouth Notes: Monmouth’s 7-1 victory over Siena on Sunday, November 4 was its third-straight MAAC Title. The eight marked the most combined goals in MAAC Championship Game history. Six different players scored for the Hawks, Jesi Rossman scored twice. Monmouth is 7-2 on the road this season and 9-1-1 at home. Monmouth has won 11-straight games, tied for the second longest in the NCAA with Howard (11) and behind Saint Louis' 14-game stretch. The winning streak is the longest in program history since 1994-95 when the Hawks won 17-straight.
Fly Hawks: Monmouth had a league-leading 14 All-MAAC honorees. Madie Gibson, Jessica Johnson, and Jill Conklin took home major awards for the Hawks. Gibson was named Offensive Player of the Year, Johnson was the Defensive Player of the Year, and freshman Jill Conklin was named the Rookie of the Year. Gibson, Johnson, Conklin, and Alli DeLuca, Lexie Palladino, Sarina Jones, and Anna Lazur were all named All-MAAC First Team. Goalkeeper Amanda Knaub was named to the All-MAAC Second Team and A’Liah Moore, Jill Conklin and Jesi Rossman were named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Gibson was named the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship’s Most Outstanding Player.
Head-to-Head: Monmouth met Virginia in the 2016 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship and fell 4-1. That is the only meeting between the two.
MAAC and NCAA Postseason History: It is Monmouth's sixth NCAA Tournament berth in program history (2007, 2009, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018). The Hawks have won four MAAC Women’s Soccer Championships as a member of the league (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018). In 2013, Monmouth played at Penn State in 2013 (L, 3-0) and 2007 (L, 4-0), and at Maryland in 2009 (L, 4-0).
MAAC Championship Recap: The No. 1 seed Hawks built a 2-0 halftime lead and scored three times in the first six minutes of the second half to pull away from the Saints. Monmouth increased its lead to 6-0 before Siena’s Emily McNelis scored the lone goal for the Saints. Monmouth claimed its third-straight MAAC title.
