2018 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship First Round

Monmouth University (16-4-1) bows out to the No. 12 University of Virginia (16-4), 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Monmouth goalkeeper Amanda Knaub tied her career-high with eight saves, all of which came in the first half. Virginia totaled 23 shots on the evening to Monmouth’s one.
 
Virginia will play Texas Tech (14-5-2) after its 3-0 victory versus No. 21 Princeton (11-4-2). The Hawks earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship with their MAAC Championship Game record 7-1 victory over Siena College (11-8-3) Sunday, November 4.

Monmouth Notes:

  • The Hawks finish the season 16-4-1.
  • This match marked Monmouth’s third-straight trip to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
  • Amanda Knaub tied her career-high with eight saves, all coming in the first half. Knaub faced 23 shots total on the night.
  • Dana Scherff recorded the only shot of the game for the Hawks.
  • This loss snaps the Hawks 11-game winning streak, which was tied for the second longest in the country.
Virginia Notes:
  • Virginia shot the ball 14 times in the first half and nine on goal. Finished with 23 shots and 10 on goal.
  • Alex Spaanstra scored both goals for the Cavaliers. Meghan McCool added the assist on the first goal.
  • Virginia won the only other meeting between the two, 4-1 in the 2016 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
