Rider Collects Seventh Straight MAAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship
BUFFALO, NY – Rider University lead from day one at the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming & Diving Championship. Senior, Zack Molloy took home 2018 MAAC Men’s Most Outstanding Swimmer, while head coach Steve Fletcher received MAAC Swimming Coach of the Year Honors.
The team broke seven records during the four day championship en route to their seventh straight MAAC title. The Broncs broke the 200 Medley Relay (1:27.83), 800 Free Relay (6:30.52), 50 Free (Zack Molloy, 19.66), 200 Free Relay (1:20.06), 100 Fly (Justin Carey, 47.55), 100 Back (Justin Carey, 47.70), and 100 Free (Zack Molloy, 43.10).
Molloy received his third straight MAAC Most Outstanding Swimmer Award as he tallied 60 points toward his team’s 718 total points. The senior now holds the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, and 500 Free conference records. Rider’s, Dillon Walles received MAAC Rookie Diving honors for his performance on the boards this week, placing third in the 3-Meter dive (319.60) and a fourth in the 1-Meter (280.25).
Canisius’ Travis Wright took home his second straight MAAC Most Outstanding Diver, as he took gold on both the 3-Meter (370.15) and 1-Meter (353.20) boards. Wright’s Coach, Ian O’Rourke also took home his second straight Diving Coach of the Year Award. The 2018 MAAC Swimming Rookie of the meet was Bryant University’s, Matthew Mays, who took first in Saturday’s 200 Fly with a time of 1:49.13, and second in the 200 Back with a time of 1:47.70.
Behind Rider in second is Marist College (668) and rounding out the top three is Bryant (583.5). In fourth, Canisius (413.5), while Iona (377) finished fifth. Sixth place was Saint Peter’s University (270) and seventh wasMonmouth University (166). Fairfield (163), Niagara University (161), and Manhattan College (150) finish the final standings in eighth, nineth, and 10
th place. .
Rider and other MAAC institutions will compete at the ECAC Championships February 23-25, in Piscataway, NJ.
