FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Director of Athletics
Paul Schlickmann has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Council, as announced by the NCAA office. Schlickmann will serve a four-year term on the national committee beginning July 1, 2018.
The NCAA Division I Council is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. Every Division I conference is represented on the Council by a collection of athletics directors, athletics administrators, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and student-athletes.
"It is an honor to serve on the Division I Council alongside so many colleagues whom I hold in such high regard," said Schlickmann. "I look forward to engaging in the critical process of helping to shape and support the NCAA's mission and direction at such a pivotal time for college athletics."
The seventh Director of Athletics in Fairfield University history, Schlickmann assumed that role in September of 2017 after seven years in the same position at Central Connecticut State University. He has previously served as the Executive Associate Director of Athletics/COO at Stony Brook University and the Associate Athletics Director for Sports Administration and Football Operations at Yale University. Schlickmann had recently been appointed to a term on the Division I Competition Oversight Committee prior to his departure from CCSU. He has also completed stints on the Division I Women's Soccer Committee from 2004-2007 (serving as Chair in 2006) and the Division I Football Championship Committee from 2014-2017.
"It is tremendous to have the MAAC represented on the NCAA Division I Council by a Director of Athletics for another four-year rotation," noted MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "When the current Council was reformatted, it was with the primary intent of have athletic directors heavily invested in the governance process, advising the NCAA Board of Directors on the major issues these administrators manage on a day-to-day basis. Paul is well qualified to represent the MAAC in these deliberations and I look forward to working with him on the many issues facing college athletics."
