Canisius & Rider Share MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship
EDISON, NJ – Canisius College (21-10, 15-3 MAAC) and Rider University (22-8, 15-3 MAAC) have earned a share of the 2017-18 MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship. Based on the MAAC Tiebreaker Policy, The Broncs are the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Championship, and the Griffs will be the No. 2 seed.
With Rider’s win over Iona College today, Niagara University clinched the No. 3 seed and the Gaels secured the No. 4 seed. Canisius topped Marist College this afternoon in its season finale. Both the Broncs and Griffs finished tied (15-3 MAAC) at the top of the standings to share the Regular Season Title.
To break the tie for seeding purposes, per the MAAC Tiebreaker Policy, when two teams are tied in the standings, regular season head-to-head results are used as the first tiebreaker. Rider and Canisius split the regular season series (1-1). The next step to break a tie is to compare each team’s record versus the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings (or in case of a tie for first place, the next highest position in the regular season standings) and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.
Rider went (1-0) against No. 3 Niagara, while Canisius went (1-1) against the Purple Eagles. The Broncs gain the advantage in the tiebreaking procedure, therefore claim the No. 1 seed in the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship and the Griffs the No. 2 seed.
The share of the 2017-18 MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship marks the eighth time in conference history that the Regular Season title has been divided. Rider earns its fourth MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship in program history, and the first since 2007-08. The Broncs have shared all four of their Regular Season Titles; the most of any team in MAAC history.
Canisius claims its first Regular Season Championship since 1993-94 and second overall. The Griffs snapped the second-longest active streak in MAAC history between Regular Season Championships (24 years).
Rider plays its first game of the 2018 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship against the winner of No. 8 Monmouth University and No. 9 Saint Peter’s University in the quarterfinal round on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
Canisius is in action for its first game of the Championship in the quarterfinal round against the winner of No. 7 (who is still TBD) and No. 10 Siena College on Friday, March 2, at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
