MAAC Schools Featured by Helper Helper
DENVER, CO -- MAAC Student-athletes at Fairfield University, Manhattan College, Canisius College, Siena University and Iona College have all earned top twenty rankings in at least one week of the 2018 NCAA Team Works | Helper Helper Community Service Competition for their community outreach efforts. This is a challenge the MAAC has been part of since its inception and it shows the deep commitment the conference has to develop student-athletes and preparing them for success in life and their communities.
This year the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has eight schools with over 1000 hours of community service. Schools have hosted/planned more than 250 service events and 60% of student-athletes have done at least 1 hour.
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management, and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. The competition is conducted from January through March and the winning schools are selected based on the number of service hours and participation of student-athletes.
Victor Hill, NCAA associate director of championships and community programs states, the "NCAA Team Works is proud to recognize the difference student-athletes make beyond the classroom and competition, while also supporting the student-athlete experience and celebrating their success in life through service projects and community engagement."
Both Iona College's Women's Cross Country and Siena College's Women's basketball are among the top 64 teams in the country (DI, DII, and DIII) for Community service. Those teams have contributed time to Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots and sports clinics.
The teams that move on will face off against another top performing team, with the winner of each week determined by the number of volunteer hours logged on the Helper Helper platform and their team's percent participation. Winners of the NCAA Team Works Challenge will be announced at the conclusion of the competition, which ends March 31st.
