No. 9 Saint Peter’s University (14-17) defeated No. 1 Rider University (22-9), 66-55, to advance to the 2018 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals. The Peacocks become the first No. 9 seed in conference history to knock off the No. 1 seed. As the No. 9 seed, they are also the seed to every advance to the semifinal round of the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship.
 
Saint Peter’s will take on either No. 4 Iona College or No. 5 Manhattan College in the semifinals on Sunday, March 4, at 7 p.m. live to tape from ESPN3 to ESPNU.
 
Saint Peter’s Notes:
  • The Peacocks advance to the semifinals for the second-straight season and fourth in the last five years.
  • Held Rider to 30.6-percent shooting from the field and 14.3-percent shooting (3-of-21) from three-point range. In the second half Rider shot just 22.6-percent (7-of-31) from the field and went 0-of-17 from behind the arc.
  • Junior forward Samuel Idowu scored a team-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and went a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The junior recorded six rebounds, a block, and a steal in 20 minutes of action.
  • Graduate guard Nick Griffin tallied 11 points and four rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
  • The Peacocks shot 44.2-percent from the field from the field, and outscored Rider, 32-20, in the paint.
 
Rider Notes:
  • Sophomore center Tyere Marshall scored 13 points and recorded seven rebounds in 31 minutes of play.
  • Sophomore guard Stevie Jordan tallied 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, three assists, and three steals.

No. 7 Quinnipiac University (12-20) advanced to the 2018 MAAC Men’s Basketball semifinals after it knocked off No. 2 Canisius College (21-11), 72-69. The Bobcats will face either No. 3 Niagara University or No. 6 Fairfield University in the semifinals on Sunday.
 
Quinnipiac Notes:
  • The Bobcats are the first No. 7 seed to defeat a No. 2 seed since 2015. They are just the sixth No. 7 seed to advance to the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals.
  • Tonight, marked the first time since 2002 that the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds were both eliminated in the quarterfinal round.   
  • Senior guard Cameron Young tallied a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season, which is tied for the league-lead. Young shot 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
  • Freshman guard Rich Kelly scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, dished out five assists, and notched a pair of steals.
  • Freshman forward Jacob Rigoni registered 12 points as he shot 4-of-9 from behind the arc.
 
Canisius Notes:
  • Senior forward Jermaine Crumpton recorded his third double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Crumpton shot 6-of-10 from the field in 37 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore Isaiah Reese registered 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Takal Molson tallied 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and six rebounds.  
  • Canisius outscored Quinnipiac, 38-28, in the paint.

The 2018 MAAC Basketball Championships take place March 1-5, at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. 16 of the 20 contests are set to air exclusively on ESPN3. The first Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinal game on Sunday, March 4, airs live on ESPN3 at 7 p.m. and will re-air at 11:30 p.m. on ESPNU, tape delayed. The second Men’s Basketball Semifinal airs at 9:30 p.m., live, on ESPNU.
