Siena College & University at Albany Sit Atop Leaderboard After Round One of 2018 MAAC Golf Championships

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Siena College men and University at Albany women are in front after round one of the 2018 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Golf Championships. Action teed off this morning at 7:30 a.m. from Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
The Saints finished day one five-over-par with a score of 293, leading competition with 17 birdies. Michael Christifulli led the way for the Saints with five birdies and only two bogies, the senior finished the day at -3 (69) to lead all individuals.
In second place and behind by two strokes is Iona College at +7 (295), the Gaels are followed by Canisius College at +11 (299). Sitting in fourth place is Monmouth University, who was seeded first coming into the opening round. The Hawks finished the day with a +17 (305). Manhattan College and Rider University are tied for fifth at +18 (306). In seventh place is Saint Peter’s University +22 (310), while Niagara University is in eighth with a mark of +24 (312), and Fairfield University in ninth at +29 (317).
Iona has two student-athletes tied for second, teammates Oisin Devereux and Justin Burkhamer shot for par. Joining them is 2017 McLeod Trophy winner, Saint Peter’s sophomore Mike Winter, who also shot for par. Canisius placed three in the top-10, David Hanes, Matt Genaway, and Jaret Chipman, who are all tied for sixth at +2 (74).
On the women’s side, Albany picked up 14 birdies during the course of the day to shoot +13 (301). The Great Danes were led by Megan Henry, who recorded four birdies on her way to leading all individuals with a one-over-par performance in the first round.
The 2017 MAAC Women’s Golf Champion, Quinnipiac University find themselves eight strokes behind Albany, shooting +21 (309). In third is the University of Dayton +28 (316) through one round. The University of Hartford is fourth shooting a +33 (321), followed by Siena at +35 (323) in fifth. The Purple Eagles shot +44 (332) to place sixth, while Monmouth recorded a +46 (334) to finish the round in seventh. La Salle University +66 (345) and Fairfield +72 (360) fill the final two spots of the leaderboard in eighth and ninth place respectively.
Albany currently has all five golfers in the top-15, three of which shot well enough to crack the top-five. Annie Lee (+3) is tied with Siena’s Sara Riso for second place, while Helga Einarsdottir is tied for fourth with Quinnipiac’s Luciana Tobia and Hartford’s Brooke MacKinnon at +4.
