2018 MAAC Water Polo Championship Set to Begin Saturday
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The 2018 MAAC Water Polo Championship takes place April 28-29, in
McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College. Marist serves as the host institution for the 16
th year in a row. The entire championship is set to air on ESPN3.
Wagner College (22-6, 14-0 MAAC) clinched its third consecutive MAAC Water Polo Regular Season title, as well as the top seed in the championship. Since April 12, 2015, the Seahawks are 42-0 against conference foes. Wagner finished its conference portion of the schedule a perfect 14-0, which marked the third-straight season that the Seahawks have posted a perfect record in MAAC play. They have claimed four-straight MAAC Championships and seven overall.
No. 1 seed Wagner takes on No. 4 seed Virginia Military Institute (20-10, 8-6 MAAC) in the first semifinal matchup of the championship on Saturday, April 28, at noon on
ESPN3. VMI advanced to the MAAC Water Polo Championship for the second year in a row. The Seahawks swept the regular season series against the Keydets and outscored them 21-15 over the course of the two-game span.
No. 2 seed Marist College (19-16, 12-2 MAAC) faces No. 3 seed Iona College (12-22, 9-5 MAAC) in the second semifinal contest on Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m. on
ESPN3. The Red Foxes took both games against the Gaels in the regular season and outscored them 17-10. Marist returns to the MAAC Water Polo Championship for the 15
th year in a row, while Iona is making its 16
th-straight trip.
The Gaels enter this weekend winners of three out of their last four contests. It is the fourth time in the last five years that Iona has claimed the No. 3 seed and seventh time overall.
No. 23 Marist and No. 18 Wagner have squared off in each of the last four MAAC Water Polo Championships. Either Marist or Wagner has competed in the championship final in every year dating to 2003. The Seahawks have captured a conference record, seven championships, while the Red Foxes are tied with Iona for the second-most with four apiece.
The consolation and championship games will be played on Sunday, April 29, at noon and 2 p.m. respectively and will air on ESPN3.
