2018 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Starts Saturday with First Round Action

EDISON, NJ – The first round of the 2018 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship gets underway on Saturday with a pair of contests featuring number three seed Fairfield University hosting number six Iona College and number four seed Canisius College hosting number five seed Niagara.
 
Co-regular season champion Marist College (10-6, 6-2 MAAC) is the number one seed and will host the semifinal and championship rounds on Thursday, May 3 and Saturday, May 5 in Poughkeepsie, New York. Monmouth University (8-9, 6-2 MAAC), who is the number two seed and also shared the regular season title, also received a bye into the semifinals.
 
Number three seed Fairfield (10-6, 6-2 MAAC) and number six seed Iona (8-9, 3-5 MAAC) battle in Fairfield, Connecticut at 11 a.m. on Saturday live on MAAC.TV. Fairfield, who was part of a four-way tie for the regular season title at 6-2, seeks a return trip to the championship where the Stags fell to Canisius last season. Iona makes its second straight appearance in the championship since last making it 2011—faced Fairfield in the semifinals. The Stags topped the Gaels 12-9 in New Rochelle, New York during the regular season.

The second first round matchup starts at 7 p.m. in Buffalo, New York between number 3 seed Canisius (9-8, 6-2 MAAC)—also part of four-way tie for regular season title—and number five seed Niagara (8-9, 5-3 MAAC). That game can be watched on ESPN+. The two sides face one another on Wednesday, April 25 in the regular season finale when Canisius won at Niagara 15-10. The Golden Griffins have six of the last seven MAAC Championships and seek a third consecutive. The Purple Eagles return to the championship for the fourth year in a row and are coming off a semifinal appearance a season ago.
