Monmouth and Marist Advance to Championship Match at Men's Tennis Championship

WEST WINDSOR, NJ - The 2018 MAAC Men's Tennis Championship as Monmouth University and Marist College punched tickets with semifinal wins on Saturday at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

The top-seeded Hawks of Monmouth (14-13) topped Fairfield University (8-12) 4-0 in one semifinal. In the other semifinal, the Red Foxes of Marist (8-5) got past Quinnipiac University 5-1.

Monmouth secured the doubles point when Ale Gomez Estrada and Alberto Giuffrida topped Anthony Caputo and Tyler Shibles 6-2 at number two doubles. The Hawks lead 1-0 after winning at number three behind Srdjan Jakovljevic and Sergio Martinez.

Newly named Men's Player of the Year Nicola Pipoli closed the match out for the Hawks at number one singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shibles. Monmouth won at number two singles and number four singles from Jakovljevic and Will Cooke Wharton.

Marist came back from 1-0 down in doubles play against Quinnipiac University (9-10) with wins at second and third doubles. Javier Restrepo and Christopher Gladden triumphed 6-3 at third doubles, and Rudolf Kurz and Gianlucca Massa won 6-4 at number two to seal the point.

Quinnipiac tied the match at 1-1 after a win by Patrick Cachapero at number four singles. The Red Foxes then reeled off wins at number three, one, and five singles to close out the match. Wins from Restrepo and number one singles and Gladden at number five finished simultaneously to give the Red Foxes five points.

The Men's Championship Match will be contested at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.
