Quinnipiac and Marist to Battle for MAAC Women's Tennis Title

WEST WINDSOR, NJ – For the second time in three seasons, the MAAC Women’s Tennis Champion will be either Quinnipiac University or Marist College.
 
Number one seed Quinnipiac (14-7) swept number four Niagara University 4-0 in the semifinals on Saturday and number two Marist (10-8) topped number three Siena College 5-0 in the other semifinal.
 
Quinnipiac and Niagara (9-18) battled for the double point that would end up with the Bobcats when Jennifer Lu and Payton Bradley snuck past Stella Peisakhova and Andreea Peteu 7-5 at number one singles. The Bobcats won at third doubles as well with the Purple Eagles taking second doubles.
 
In singles, Quinnipiac used straight set wins at number six, two, and four to clinch the 4-0 win. Layla Rodriguez sealed the match for the Bobcats with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The Purple Eagles were up at number three doubles and were even at a set apiece at number five when the match ended.
 
Marist won the doubles point against the Saints of Siena with wins at number one (6-0) and three (6-1). Siena (12-9) was leading at number two doubles when Marist clinched the team point.
 
Claire Schmitz at number three singles made it 2-0 Red Foxes with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Sam Galu moved Marist to within one point of clinching at 3-0 with a straight set win of her own, 6-2, 6-4. Wins by Amy Galloway and Julia Gabay at sixth and first singles respectively were clinched at the same time to give Marist the 5-0 sweep.
 
The Women’s Championship Match will be contested at 2 p.m. on Sunday morning at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.
