2018 Water Polo Consolation Game

No. 3 Iona College (13-23) defeated No. 4 Virginia Military Institute (22-12), 9-7, in the 2018 MAAC Water Polo Consolation game. The win marks the second year in a row that the Gaels defeated the Keydets in the Consolation game of the MAAC Championship.
Iona Notes:
- The Gaels have won the last five MAAC Water Polo Championship Consolation games dating to 2014.
- Iona had three student-athletes score two goals in the win. Senior driver Devika Joshi tallied two goals, two steals, and a drawn exclusion.
- Senior driver Megan Hofer totaled two goals, while senior utility Hannah Schultz finished the contest with two goals, one steal, and one drawn exclusion.
- Senior goalie Britten Vilander made eight saves and posted a save percentage of .533. At the 1:13 mark of the third quarter Vilander turned away a breakaway attempt by VMI’s Emma Noble to keep the game tied at 6-6.
- Iona shot .257 percent this afternoon and were 2-10 on the powerplay.
VMI Notes:
- Senior center Shelby Barkley recorded a game-high four goals. She registered a hat trick in the first half and finished the game with three drawn exclusions.
- VMI erased an early, 3-0, deficit and went into halftime with the game being tied, 4-4.
- Senior attack Natalie Rivas collected an assist and a game-high four drawn exclusions.
- VMI falls to (0-4) all-time in the MAAC Water Polo Championship.
