Marist & Wagner Set to Meet in MAAC Water Polo Championship Game for Fifth Year in a Row
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – No. 1 seed Wagner College (23-6) will face No. 2 seed Marist College (20-6) in the 2018 MAAC Water Polo Championship game on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. on
ESPN3. The Seahawks and Red Foxes are set to meet in the championship final for the fifth year in a row.
The 2018 MAAC Water Polo Championship is held, in
McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College. Marist serves as the host institution for the 16
th year in a row. The entire championship will air on ESPN3.
The Seahawks advanced to the championship final with an 18-5 win over No. 4 seed Virginia Military Institute in the semifinal round on Saturday. The Red Foxes used a stout defensive effort to propel them to a 7-4 victory over No. 3 seed Iona College in the semifinals.
No. 23 Marist and No. 18 Wagner have squared off in each of the last four MAAC Water Polo Championship games. Either Marist or Wagner has competed in the championship final in every year dating to 2003. They have claimed four-straight MAAC Championships and a conference record seven overall, while the Red Foxes are tied with Iona for the second-most with four.
Wagner clinched its third consecutive MAAC Water Polo Regular Season title this season. Since April 12, 2015, the Seahawks are 43-0 against conference foes. Wagner finished its conference portion of the schedule 14-0, which marked the third-straight season that the Seahawks have posted a perfect record in MAAC play.
The Seahawks earned a pair of regular season wins over the Red Foxes in 2018. Wagner outscored Marist, 25-15 in the two games played this season.
The Gaels take on the Keydets in the 2018 MAAC Water Polo Consolation game at 12 p.m. on
ESPN3.
