Wagner Claims Fifth Consecutive MAAC Water Polo Championship

No. 1 Wagner College (24-6) knocked off No. 2 Marist College (20-17), 10-7, to claim its fifth consecutive MAAC Water Polo Championship. The Seahawks have won a MAAC record eight Water Polo Championships.
Wagner Notes:
- Six of Wagner’s eight MAAC Championship title game victories have come against Marist (2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2007).
- Since April 12, 2015, the Seahawks are 44-0 against conference foes.
- Senior utility Kimberly Watson was named the 2018 MAAC Water Polo Championship MVP. The utility takes home the championship MVP honor for the second year in a row. Over the course of two games, the senior found the back of the net seven times to lead the Seahawks scoring attack. In today’s win, Watson notched three goals, four drawn exclusions, and three steals.
- Sophomore attack Jacqui Sjoren and freshman goalie Katherine Campbell were named members of the All-Championship Team. Sjogren scored four goals to lead all scorers in the championship finale. Campbell made five saves and posted a .417 save-percentage in net this afternoon.
- Junior attack Erica Hardy totaled three points (two goals, one assist) and drew an exclusion.
- The Seahawks shot .345 percent and went 4-9 on powerplays.
- Wagner earns the leagues’ automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship. The 2018 NCAA Women’s Water Polo selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com tomorrow, April 30, at 8 p.m.
Marist Notes:
- Senior goalie Jessica Hermosillo and senior defender Diana Carballo were named to the All-Championship Team.
- Carballo led the Red Foxes with five points (three goals, two assists) in the game.
- Hermosillo made eight saves, had a .444 save-percentage, and swiped two steals.
- Senior utility Katherine Tijerina finished the game with two goals, three steals, and two drawn exclusions.
