Monmouth Men’s Tennis will Face No. 16 Columbia in First Round of NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Monmouth University men’s tennis team will face No. 16 Columbia University in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships as announced by the organization on Tuesday nights Selection Show.
 
Columbia will host Monmouth on Friday, May 11 at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center after taking home their fifth straight Ivy League Championship.
 
The Hawks defeated the Red Foxes of Marist College to claim their third straight MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship. Monmouth secured wins at number two and three doubles. Ale Gomez Estrada and Alberto Giuffrida won number two singles while teammates Sergio Martinez and Srdjan Jakovljevic took the win at doubles three. Gomez Estrada secured the title with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number three singles over Marist’s Gianlucca Massa. The senior was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the championship.
 
Monmouth swept the 2018 MAAC Men’s Tennis Major Awards. Nicola Pipoli was named 2018 MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year while Will Cooke Wharton took home Rookie of the Year and head coach Alex Kasorov was named MAAC Coach of the Year. The Hawks finished the season a perfect 7-0 in conference and 13-13 overall.
