Monmouth Squares off Against No. 16 Columbia in First Round of 2018 NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament on Friday

QUEENS, NY – Monmouth University (15-13) faces No. 16 Columbia University (17-4) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 11, at 1 p.m. The match will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Queens, NY.
Monmouth will make its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks have faced the University of Virginia in the opening round the last two years. Virginia then went on to win the National Championship each time.
The winner of the match will move on to face Virginia or Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in the second round on Saturday, May 12, at 12 p.m.
Monmouth topped Marist, 4-0, on April 26 to collect its third straight MAAC Men’s Tennis title. With the win, the Hawks secured the league’s automatic bid to the round of 64. Monmouth’s Ale Gomez Estrada was named MAAC Most Outstanding Performer.
Monmouth’s Nicola Pipoli was unanimously named MAAC Player of the Year and teammate Will Cooke Wharton was named MAAC Rookie of the Year. Head coach Alex Kasarov was named Coach of the Year for the second straight-season. Monmouth posted a league-high 12 student-athletes to All-MAAC Teams.
