Monmouth Claims First MAAC Baseball Regular Season Championship
EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University (28-23, 16-7 MAAC) clinched its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball Regular Season Championship. The Hawks have earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship which takes place May 23-26, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, NY.
Monmouth claims the top seed in the MAAC Baseball Championship for the first time in program history. The highest they were previously seeded in the championship was No. 3 in 2016. The Hawks finished their conference slate with 16 wins, which were tied for the most they have posted since joining the MAAC in 2014. They also won 16 games in 2016. Monmouth will be making its fourth appearance in the MAAC Baseball Championship.
The Hawks were slated to play Fairfield University in their final conference game of the season on Saturday. The game was canceled due to inclement weather. Monmouth (16-7), Canisius College (16-8), and Quinnipiac University (16-8) all finished the regular season with 16 wins. The Hawks recorded the best winning percentage (.696) of the three teams to finish with 16 wins and clinched the Regular Season title and No. 1 seed.
The Hawks rank third in the league in team ERA (4.65), second in opposing batting average (.262), tied for third in strikeouts (355), fourth in hits allowed (440), fourth in earned runs allowed (224), second in walks (171). At the plate, Monmouth was fourth in on-base percentage (.370), third in runs scored (317), third in RBI (290), third in doubles (93), second in triples (14), and fourth in home runs (31). In the field, the Hawks had the highest fielding percentage in the league (.973).
It is the first time in MAAC history that the Baseball Championship will be played at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Fairfield University, Iona College, and Siena College serve as co-hosts for the event. The winner of the championship earns the MAAC’s automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Baseball Championship.
All games will air on ESPN+, which marks the first time in conference history that every game of the MAAC Baseball Championship will be broadcasted on an ESPN platform.
The championship field is made up of the top six teams from the regular season. Canisius College, Marist College, Monmouth, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, and Siena College have clinched spots in the championship.
