MAAC Announces 2018 Men’s Lacrosse All-MAAC Teams & Major Award Winners
WEST LONG BRANCH, NY – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced the 2018 Men’s Lacrosse All-MAAC Teams and major award winners. Award recipients were honored this evening at the leagues’ annual awards show, which was held on the campus of Monmouth University.
Connor Kearnan takes home the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year award for the second-straight season. He is just the second Canisius College student-athlete to earn the honor in back-to-back years (Kevin Ross, 2005-06). He led the conference in points (71), points per game (5.07), assists (44), and assists per game (3.14). The senior ranks sixth in the nation in assists per game and eighth in points per game. Kearnan was a unanimous selection for the honor.
Marist College’s Brian Corrigan claims his second career MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honor (2016). He is only the second MAAC men’s lacrosse student-athlete to win multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards (Providence’s Brian O’Rorke won three-straight from 2002-04). He led the league in saves (166) and was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season.
Quinnipiac University senior midfield Will Vitelli becomes the first men’s lacrosse student-athlete to earn the MAAC Face-off Specialist of the Year award three seasons in a row. Vitelli was a unanimous pick face-to-He led the league in face-off percentage (.592 percent), ground balls (74), and ground balls per game (5.29). The senior ranks within the nation’s top 25 in face-off winning percentage and ground balls per game. Vitelli was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. Vitelli was a unanimous selection for the award.
Quinnipiac’s Adam Bellamy is a two-time Long Stick Midfielder of the Year as he previously received the honor in 2016. The senior ranks fourth in the MAAC in ground balls (70) and is sixth in ground balls per game (5.00). He is second on the Bobcats in caused turnovers (19) and ranks within the nation’s top 35 in ground balls per game and caused turnover per game (1.36).
Jake Tomsik is the first student-athlete from Quinnipiac to collect the MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year award. The freshman totaled 43 points (26 goals, 17 assists), and 24 ground balls this season. He finished the regular season tied for sixth in the league in assists, tied for seventh in assists per game (1.21), tied for seventh in points, and tied for eighth in points per game. He was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times this season.
The 2018 BSN Sports MAAC Coach of the Year is Eric Fekete from Quinnipiac. Fekete guided the Bobcats to the 2018 MAAC Regular Season title with a perfect (6-0) mark in conference play. Quinnipiac enters the championship as the No. 1 seed for the second time in the last three years. Coach Fekete earns the MAAC coach of the year honor for the second time.
Canisius, Detroit Mercy, Monmouth, and Quinnipiac make up the 2018 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship field. The championship is hosted by Monmouth University at the brand-new
Kessler Stadium, May 3-5. All three games of the championship are set to air on the ESPN family of networks.
