Marist and Manhattan Win on Day One of 2018 MAAC Softball Championship

The No. 6 Marist College Red Foxes (25-30) scored seven runs over the final three innings; including four in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Brandi Coon and Ali Milam had RBI singles in the sixth and Claire Oberdorf added a two-RBI triple to move it to a 6-2 game. Marist added one more in the seventh. Siena’s two runs came off a single from Amanda Dodson in the second.
 
Marist Notes
• Advances to face No. 2 Fairfield tomorrow at 9 a.m. It is the second straight season that the two sides will meet in the postseason
• Milam’s RBI was her 54th of the season, which ties the single-season record at Marist. The sophomore was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
• It was the first multi-RBI game for Oberdorf since April 14 against Quinnipiac.
• Megan Beiermeister tossed a complete game and needed only 77 pitches.
 
Siena Notes
• Dodson’s two RBI brings her total to 11 on the season.
• Lauren Butts went 2.1 innings and allowed only one run but took the loss for the Saints.
• Jess Vollmer went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
• Siena will play the loser of #1 Monmouth and #5 Manhattan on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. on MAAC.TV

Number five seed Manhattan College (27-23) used a four-run fourth inning to advance past No. 4 Iona College (19-26) 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Daniela Chiorazzi, Adriana Gambino, and Shannon Puthe all had RBI singles in the fourth. Puthe’s base hit brought in both Gambino and Chiorazzi to make it 6-1 Jaspers. Iona took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a fielder’s choice off the bat from Kimmie Chiapparelli. The Gaels got one back in the fifth on an RBI groundout.
 
Manhattan Notes
• The Jaspers have now won 10 games in a row and face No. 1 seed and host Monmouth at 11:30 a.m.
• Briana Matazinsky (11-9) picked up the win after going 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs.
• The top six hitters in the Jaspers’ lineup all had at least one hit. Lauren Pitney and Kat Prevo had two.
• Pitney and Puthe added two RBI apiece.
 
Iona Notes
• Iona will face the loser of #2 Fairfield and #6 Marist at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
• Marnie Skinner (8-8) took the loss after allowing six earned runs over 3.2 innings.
• Rebecca Gabert and Marisa Gurgel scored the two runs for the Gaels.
