Canisius Eliminated by Gonzaga in 2018 NCAA Baseball Championship Minneapolis Regional
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Canisius College (35-22) was eliminated by Gonzaga University (32-23), 8-2, in the 2018 NCAA Baseball Championship Minneapolis Regional.
Canisius Notes:
- Christ Conley crossed the plate to get the Griffs on the board in the bottom of the first when Ryan Stekl grounded out to second.
- Mark McKenna recorded four hits on the day, including a double down the left field line in the fourth. It was the juniors third four-hit game on the season and first since May 24 against Quinnipiac. McKenna later came across to score Canisius’ second run of the game when Liam Wilson singled up the middle.
- Andrew Sipowicz got the start for the Golden Griffins, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.
- 2018 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year, Tyler Smith took the mound with one out in the seventh for Canisius. The righty pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out three Bulldogs.
- Canisius is now (0-6) all-time in NCAA Tournament games.
Gonzaga Notes:
- Gonzaga stays alive and will face the loser of No. 14 Minnesota vs. UCLA tomorrow at 7 p.m (ET).
- Alek Jacob got the win for Gonzaga. The right hander tossed 8.0 innings, surrendered two runs, earned, on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.
- The Bulldogs scored eight runs on 17 hits. Austin Pinorini and Gunnar Schubert lead the charge as they went a combined 6-for-10 at the dish with five RBI.
- Schubert recorded an RBI triple in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-2.
