Monmouth & Canisius Win 2018 MAAC Pepsi Commissioner’s Cups
EDISON, NJ – For the fourth consecutive year Monmouth University has claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Overall Commissioner’s Cup. For the first time ever, the Hawks also secured the Women’s Cup. On the men’s side, Canisius College won the cup for the first time.
Dr. McNeil’s commitment to winning, building coaching staffs that encourage excellence in the classroom and on the field of play is a model for all the MAAC. Similarly, for the Men’s Commissioner Cup, Canisius College has demonstrated that with the right leadership and the commitment of its coaching staffs and student-athletes that every school in the MAAC can achieve greatness. Congratulations to Director of Athletics Bill Maher and his staff for winning their first men’s cup.” “Congratulations to Monmouth University and Canisius College for their success this past year as reflected in their winning the MAAC Commissioner Cups,” said Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Under Dr. Marilyn McNeil’s leadership, Monmouth has challenged for the Cups each year, and for the first time captured the Women’s Cup.
The MAAC Pepsi Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 24 championships conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all regular seasons and championships that it fields a varsity team. Only the scores from Men’s & Women’s Basketball, plus the top six men’s and top six women’s scores are used to determine an institution’s total points.
During the 2017-18 campaign, Monmouth won seven MAAC Championships (women’s soccer, men’s & women’s indoor track & field, men’s tennis, men’s & women’s outdoor track & field, and softball), four MAAC Regular Season titles (women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s tennis, and softball), and shared one MAAC Regular Season title (women’s lacrosse) to aid in claiming its fourth Overall Commissioner’s Cup and its first Women’s Cup. Monmouth has now claimed nine cups (four men’s, one women’s, and four overall) in the last five years.
“Winning our fourth overall Commissioner’s Cup is a testament to the talents, work ethic, and competitiveness of our student-athletes, their coaches, and our support staff,” Monmouth University Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil said. “This is an annual goal of Monmouth Athletics and I couldn’t be more pleased with this tremendous accomplishment. Hats off, as well, to our female student-athletes. We have always known about their abilities, and now our first women’s Commissioner’s Cup is a product of our belief in them, their coaches and support staff.”
For the first time ever Canisius won the Men’s Cup, its first ever Cup (men’s, women’s, and overall) since the start of the Commissioner’s Cup in 1981. The Golden Griffins won two MAAC Championships (men’s lacrosse and baseball) and earned a share of the men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse MAAC Regular Season titles.
“We are extremely proud of the collective achievement from our programs to win the 2017-18 MAAC Men’s Commissioner’s Cup,” Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “This a tremendous accomplishment, a first for Canisius in our 28-year history in the MAAC, recognizing the sustained excellence from each of our men’s teams during this past year. To have their effort rewarded with the Commissioners Cup is certainly something special. This is truly a team award and is only possible thanks to the support we receive from the Canisius administration and the many alumni, family and friends who are the ‘Team behind the Team’ in their support of the Blue and Gold Fund. We all share this collective achievement.”
Monmouth finished first with a total of 154.00 points, followed by Quinnipiac University in second place with 132.50 points, and Fairfield University in third place with 128.50 points.
On the men’s side, Canisius claimed the top spot with 71.25 points, followed by Monmouth in second with 70.00 points, and in third place was Rider University with 61.75 points.
The Hawks finished with 84.00 points to earn the women’s cup, Fairfield came in second with 82.00 points, and Marist College finished in third place with 77.75 points.
