MAAC Announces 2018-19 Women's Basketball Schedule
EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has released the 2018-19 women’s basketball league schedule. Each of the 11 schools play an unbalanced 18-game slate, with the 18 games being split evenly between nine home and away.
Conference action begins after the new year on Thursday, January 3, 2019 with a trio of games.
2018-19 Matchup Highlights
Defending MAAC-Champion Quinnipiac University will host Fairfield University at the People’s United Center on opening night. The Stags have recorded 11-straight winning seasons in conference play while the Bobcats went a MAAC-record 18-0 in conference play last season. Quinnipiac has won 25-straight conference matches dating back to February 3, 2017 when the Bobcats lost to Fairfield. Niagara University hosts MAAC-Champion runner up Marist College and Manhattan College travels to Canisius College that evening.
A rematch of the 2018 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game between Quinnipiac and Marist will take place January 10 at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, NY. The two will meet again February 23 in Hamden, CT.
A couple key rivalries highlighting the schedule include the “Battle of the Bridge” between Niagara and Canisius on February 13 at the Gallagher Center and February 27 in the Koessler Athletic Center. Iona College and Manhattan square off twice, the first at Manhattan’s Draddy Gymnasium on January 18 and the second on February 22 at the Hynes Center during the final weeks of the season.
Saint Peter’s University and Canisius are under new leadership this year as both programs hired new head coaches this offseason. The Peacocks brought in former FDU-Florham head coach Marc Mitchell. The former Devils’ head coach was there for the last nine seasons. The Golden Griffins announced Scott Hemer will take over the coaching helm after spending his past 11 seasons at SUNY Genesco as head coach. The new coaches will get a chance to meet early in MAAC play when Canisius travels to Saint Peter’s on January 12. The two will meet again at Canisius for the final meeting of the season a few weeks later on February 2.
Monmouth University starts the conference schedule off with a trip to Iona January 4 and hosts rival Rider University in the home opener at OceanFirst Bank Center on January 10. Rider begins its season at the Alumni Gymnasium hosting Fairfield on January 6.
Siena College starts the season on the road verses Saint Peter’s January 4, then have a three-game homestand versus Iona (January 6), Manhattan (January 11) and Rider (January 13) to begin MAAC play.
The final weekend of the 2018-19 regular season will feature a full-slate of hoops with every team in action. Thursday, February 28 Iona will wrap up its regular season with a trip to Saint Peter’s. Saturday, March 2, Canisius will close out its season much like it started versus Manhattan. Marist and Niagara will also begin and end conference play against each other. Saint Peter’s will conclude its regular season with a visit from Monmouth and Siena welcomes Quinnipiac to Loudonville, NY to end their respective seasons. MAAC play will end with Fairfield hosting Rider from Alumni Gym in Fairfield, CT.
