Dave Calloway & Ellen Brennan Schum Named 2018 Monmouth University MAAC Basketball Honor Roll Inductees
EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced Monmouth University basketball legends Dave Calloway and Ellen Brennan Schum will be inducted in the 2018 MAAC Honor Roll. Honorees will be enshrined in “The MAAC Experience” exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 15.
Each member institution of the MAAC honors one male and one female from its basketball “family” as part of the 2018 induction class. A dinner event takes place Saturday, September 15 at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams to recognize the Honor Roll inductees.
Each honoree will be profiled in the game program for the 2019 MAAC Basketball Championships and will be featured in a video display at “The MAAC Experience.”
Dave Calloway ‘99
Dave Calloway excelled at Monmouth both as a player and a coach, and was on the coaching staff for all four of Monmouth’s NCAA Tournament appearances, including three as the head coach. Calloway served as the Hawk’s head man for 14 seasons, winning three Northeast Conference championships and 178 games in the process. Calloway earned 2001 NEC Coach of the Year honors, leading the Blue and White to an NEC title with 21 wins, 15 coming in the league. On the court, he is eighth all-time in scoring with 1,404 points and still holds the MU single-game record for three pointers with nine at Pepperdine in 1990. The sharpshooter is the Hawks’ all-time leader in three-pointers made with 260 and in single-season triples with 97 in 1989-90. He also holds the program record for three-point shooting percentage at 45.9-percent, and is sixth in career assists. Calloway was named All-NEC Second Team and to the All-Rookie Team, and is the only Academic All-American in program history (1990).
Ellen Brennan Schum ‘88
A two-sport standout at Monmouth, Ellen Brennan Schum '88 competed in both basketball and cross country during her career. The 1988 Monmouth Valedictorian, Brennan Schum was also honored as the 1988 Monmouth Athlete of the Year. A four-year starter and three-time team captain in basketball, Brennan Schum was a two-time Second-Team All-Northeast Conference player and was named to the 1987 NEC All-Tournament Team. In 1988, Brennan Schum earned Second-Team Academic All-American status and was named the team MVP. Part of teams that went undefeated in ECAC Metro Conference play in 1986-87 and 1987-88, Brennan Schum ranks 21st all-time in scoring (926), first in career assists (530) and 11th in games played (114). She dished the third most assists in a single-season in 1985-86 with 156, and also has the fourth-most assists in a single season with 149. Her 73.1 career free throw percentage ranks seventh in program history.
