NEW ORLEANS, LA – It was announced on Monday by the USTFCCCA that the Iona College men's program is ranked second in the Preseason Regional Rankings. The women's team is slotted eighth in the Northeast Region.
The Maroon & Gold men's team began last year's season ranked second in the Northeast Region and eighth in the NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Preseason National Coaches Poll. The Gaels went on to win their 26
th straight MAAC title, extending the longest active conference winning streak in Division I. Iona went on to place second at the 2017 Northeast Regional Championship and 12
th at the NCAA Championship.
Syracuse is ranked first the 2018 NCAA D1 USTFCCCA Northeast preseason rankings. The Gaels rank ahead of Stony Brook, Providence and Boston University. The Maroon & Gold are the only MAAC team represented in the USTFCCCA preseason regional rankings.
Iona's women's is coming off a season where they claimed their second straight MAAC Championship, and 12
th out of the past 13 years. It began the 2017 ranked 10
th in in the Northeast Region Preseason Poll. The Gaels went on to place sixth as a team at the 2017 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship.
Then-freshmen Egle Morenaite, who was named the MAAC Most Outstanding Runner and Rookie of the Meet at the 2017 MAAC Championship, competed in the 2017 NCAA Championship as an individual competitor. She placed seventh at the Northeast Regional to claim the All-Region recognition and concluded the NCAA Championship with a 158
th place finish among over 250 competitors.
Marist is 10
th in the 2018 USTFCCCA Northeast preseason rankings.
On Tuesday morning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference released the 2018 Preseason Coaches' Poll. Both the Iona men's and women's program were selected as the preseason favorites. The men's team was a unanimous selection and the women's team had eight of the 11 first place votes.
Iona begins its 2018 campaign at the Marist Season Opener this Saturday, Sept. 1.
