Field Hockey Conference Play to Start Friday
EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opens up Field Hockey league play Friday, September 28 with a two-game slate featuring Fairfield University (8-1) and Sacred Heart University (6-5) at noon followed by Monmouth University (5-5) visiting Rider University (4-4) at 7 p.m. on
ESPN3.
Fairfield is currently riding a six-game winning streak, the longest in school history. The Stags haven't lost in the month of September and their only loss on the season is to Drexel August 31, 1-4. Fairfield's Danielle Profita and Emma Matlach rank tied-third in the MAAC for goals scored with five. Profita is fourth in the MAAC with 15 points and second with five assists. Goalkeeper Zoe Rosen leads the MAAC with only six goals allowed, .785 goals against average, three shutouts, and an .818 save percentage.
Sacred Heart started its season with a five-game road trip winning four of those. The Pioneers have been aggressive on offense tied for the MAAC-lead with Fairfield totaling 118 shots and the most in shots on goal with 79. The Pioneers are tied-third with Monmouth in goals (19) and leads the MAAC with 101 saves and a .808 save percentage as a team. Sacred Heart's first road conference match is slated versus Bryant Friday, October 12 at 4 p.m.
Rider enters MAAC play leading in scoring at a 3.6 per game clip. In the Broncs MAAC schedule they will travel to LIU Brooklyn for its second contest Sunday, October 7 after its first MAAC road hosting Monmouth in the opener Friday. Broncs' Goalkeeper Lena Vandam is tied for the MAAC lead in shutouts with Fairfield's Rosen at three.
Monmouth will host LIU Brooklyn in its first home conference game on Friday, October 5 at 4 p.m. The Hawks are led by forwards Kelly Hanna (6 goals, 2 assists) and Georgia Garden Bachop (5 goals, 1 assist). The two lead the Hawks in points and goals respectively, while Gabi Milan has handled the net with 41 saves and one shutout in 10 games.
Bryant University's first league contest will be at Fairfield on Friday, October 5 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs first MAAC home game will be Friday, October 12 at 4 p.m. versus Sacred Heart. Bryant (2-8) earned non-league wins over Hofstra and Colgate. Freshman goalkeeper Marijn Jaarsma has been the glue to the Bulldogs success as Jaarsma is averaging 2.23 GAA in seven starts over the course of 10 games played. Jaarsma has earned MAAC Rookie of the Week twice in five weeks to begin her collegiate career.
LIU Brooklyn (2-8) begins its MAAC-play Friday, October 5 when the Blackbirds take a trip to West Long Branch, NJ to take on Monmouth. The Blackbirds first MAAC home match will be just two days later when LIU welcomes Rider to town at 1 p.m. LIU defeated Holy Cross, 2-1 and Lehigh 6-2 in its only non-league victories. Eva van Wakeren is tied-second in the MAAC with six goals and tied-sixth in points with 13. The freshman forward matches Bryant’s Jaarsma with two MAAC Rookie of the Week honors.
The 2018 MAAC Field Hockey Championship will be a two-day championship on Friday, November 2 and Sunday, November 4. The championship will be hosted by the No. 1 seed with the semifinals taking place on November 2 and the final November 4. Fairfield was the 2017 and 2015 MAAC champion and has competed in the MAAC Field Hockey Championship the past three years.
