Volleyball Conference Starts Saturday

EDISON, NJ – MAAC Volleyball league play gets underway this weekend. Saturday features a full five-game slate with four games set for Sunday.
 
Saturday’s slate features; Niagara University at Siena College, Iona College at Manhattan College, Canisius College at Marist College, Quinnipiac University at Rider University, and Fairfield University at Saint Peter’s University. All games start at 1 p.m. The Canisius-Marist contest and the Quinnipiac-Rider game will be on ESPN3.
 
Sunday’s contests include; Quinnipiac at Saint Peter’s, Niagara at Marist, Fairfield at Rider, and Canisius at Siena. Like Saturday, all matchups start at 1 p.m., and Niagara-Marist will be on ESPN3.
 
Fairfield seeks a fourth consecutive regular season title, and the Stags have not lost a conference match in each of the last two seasons. The Stags were the preseason favorite coming into the 2018 campaign. Fairfield is also the four-time defending MAAC Champion.
 
Rider had won four-straight before losing its final match last weekend at La Salle. The Broncs have held its opponents to a .199 hitting percentage, which is the best in the MAAC. Rider also has the most road wins in the MAAC with three.
 
Canisius is the top hitting team in the league at .210 over its 33 sets played in 2018. Iona College and Rider are tied for second at .177. Canisius and Iona are first-and-second in the MAAC in kills and digs per set.
 
Individually, Camila Vazquez of Canisius paces the circuit in hitting at a .351 clip. The freshman also leads the league in kills (73). Hailey Riede of Rider averages 3.87 kills/set to place her in the pole position in the MAAC.
 
Quinnipiac's Kat Miller is 13th in Division I with 20 service aces. The senior leads the MAAC with 0.57 aces per set, which is 22nd in Division I.
 
Freshman Alexis Rich of Fairfield dishes out 9.43 assists per set to lead the league. Rich had a season-high 51 assists versus Northeastern on September 8, which is the most in a four-set match in the MAAC this season. Rider’s Anilee Sher and Iona’s Emma Rose share the league-lead with 55 assists in a match. Both came on September 1 in five sets.
 
The 2018 MAAC Volleyball Championship will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida from November 15-17. All 11 teams will make the trip down to Disney for the three-day championship. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
