Men's Soccer Conference Play Gets Underway Wednesday
EDISON, NJ - The 2018 edition of MAAC Men’s Soccer play starts on Wednesday with 10 teams in action.
Three games start at 4 p.m. on Wednesday; Siena College at Niagara University, Marist College at Saint Peter’s University, and Quinnipiac University at Canisius College. Two more contests start at 7 p.m.; Iona College at Rider University, and Manhattan College at Monmouth University.
Fairfield University, Manhattan, and Marist all defeated ranked teams in non-conference play. Marist won at then-No. 17 Pacific 1-0 on September 3. Fairfield topped then-No. 9 UNCW on the road in overtime 3-2. Manhattan beat then-No. 25 Fordham at home 1-0, which was the first win for the Jaspers over a ranked opponent on record.
MAAC teams have played beyond regulation time 24 times over 78 games in non-conference play. The league went 6-7-11 in those contests.
Manhattan, who has won four-straight, held the best record in non-conference play in the MAAC; going 7-1 (.875). The .875-clip is the best non-conference record in program history. The Jaspers started 3-0 for the time since 1986.
Fairfield and Iona also posted .500 records or better in outside of league this season. Iona went 3-2-1, which included a win over three-time defending Northeast Conference champion St. Francis Brooklyn. Fairfield went 3-3 with wins over Yale and Army West Point along with the win over UNCW. Four of the Stags six games have gone past regulation this season.
Manhattan, Marist, and Fairfield all rank inside the top 75 of the NCAA Division I RPI rankings. Manhattan sits at 44, Marist checks in at 61, and Fairfield holds down 71.
Three different teams ended non-conference play on winning streaks. Manhattan sports a four-game run while Iona and Quinnipiac have won back-to-back contests heading into league play on Wednesday. Saint Peter’s enters league play unbeaten in its last three (2-0-1).
Dominic Laws of Saint Peter’s, and Berti Fourrier and Brandon Joseph-Buadi of Manhattan share the MAAC lead with nine points. Three more players are tied at eight and seven points. In the goal-scoring department, five players share the league lead with four.
Siena’s Greg Monroe has been the busiest goalkeeper in the MAAC this season. The freshman has averaged six saves per game, which ranks him third in Division I. A trio of goalkeepers have posted save percentages over 80-percent in non-conference play; Ryan Sinnott of Marist (.850), Jared Mazzola of Quinnipiac (.840), and Manhattan’s Marcellin Gohier (.839). Gohier leads the MAAC with four clean sheets this season.
Manhattan leads the MAAC in points (48), goals (17), assists (14), goals allowed per game (0.62), and goals against average (0.71). Iona ranks second to Manhattan multiple categories including; points, goals, and goals per game.
The 2018 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship will take place from November 4-11. The first round of the six-team championship will be on Sunday, November 4 when the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds host the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. The semifinals will be at the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds on Thursday, November 8. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game on Sunday, November 11.
