MAAC Student-Athletes to Attend APPLE Institute in Orlando
EDISON, NJ – Three student-athletes from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and one conference representative will be attending the APPLE Institute in Orlando, FL on January 25-27, 2019.
Amanda Guy of Marist rowing,
Layla Rodriguez from Quinnipiac women’s tennis and
Douglas Nover of Saint Peter’s cross country/track and field are the three student-athletes who were selected to represent the league at the three-day event. MAAC Director of Compliance, Erika Seagren will join the trio in the Sunshine State.
“I am excited to have Amanda, Layla, and Douglas joining me at the APPLE Institute,” noted Seagren. “All three individuals are rising stars who have already made an impact on their respective campuses, and attending this conference will only allow them to expand their footprints.”
Guy, a junior and two-year member of the Red Foxes Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), has recently been elevated to an executive board member for the 2018-19 academic year. The New York native also serves as an admissions tour guide as well as a council member to the Ladies Empowering Athletic Program (LEAP).
Rodriguez, a junior, serves on the executive board of the Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) group at Quinnipiac. The former MAAC Tennis Rookie of the Year is also assisting in the coordination of the MAAC Choices sober tailgate before the Quinnipiac men’s lacrosse game versus Marist College on April 13.
Nover, the MAAC SAAC Vice Chair, will round out the trio. The Peacocks’ SAAC President was one-of-two recipients of the 2018 NCAA AASP Career Development Award in 2018 and has played a key role in establishing the
#A11MAACMinds campaign, promoting mental health.
As a recipient of the NCAA Choices Grant, the MAAC is required to attend the conference once throughout its three-year span. The MAAC Choices objective is to alter the decisions being made in the social landscape of higher education. The program encompasses a three-pronged action-oriented process: education, social campaigning, and programming.
The APPLE Institute is a three-day training for student-athletes, athletic administrators, and campus partners dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion of college athletes. The NCAA Sport Science Institute partners with the University of Virginia to sponsor the event. Over the course of the training, there will be presentations on topics from bystander intervention, supplement traps, developing drug testing policies, and additional topics as well.
“As recipients of the NCAA Choices grant, attending the APPLE Institute will be a unique opportunity for the MAAC and its student-athletes,” said Seagren. “As the only conference attending, we intend to learn how to apply the APPLE model and recreate ways to utilize it in the conference setting.”
