Monmouth Men, Quinnipiac Women Picked as 2019 MAAC Tennis Preseason Favorites
EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University has been named the preseason favorite to win the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Tennis Championship, while Quinnipiac University was named the favorite to win the 2019 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
The Monmouth men finished with a total of 48 points and six first-place votes, while the Quinnipiac women finished with 47 points and five first-place votes. The Hawks are two-time defending champions, winning in both 2017 and 2018. The Bobcats come into 2019 having won the previous five Women’s Championships. They return the 2018 Most Outstanding Female Player, senior Jennifer Lu.
On the men’s side, Quinnipiac finished in second with a total of 42 points and one first-place vote. In third was Marist College with 33 points. The Bobcats and Red Foxes met in the semifinals last year, with Marist edging Quinnipiac 4-1.
Fairfield University and Siena College round out the top five, receiving 31 and 20 points respectively. The Stags made it to the semifinals last season, where they played eventual champion Monmouth. Niagara University and Rider University round out the field with the Purple Eagles receiving 15 total points and the Broncs receiving seven points.
On the women’s side, Siena finished in second with 42 points with a single first-place vote. The Saints went into the 2018 Championship as the third seed, falling to Marist 5-0 in the semifinals.
Fairfield and Marist finished in a tie for third with each school receiving 32 points. The Red Foxes finished runners-up last season, falling to Quinnipiac 4-1 in the championship match. The Stags look to make their first finals appearance since 2014.
Niagara, Monmouth, and Rider round out the seven-team poll. The Purple Eagles received 27 points and a first-place vote after entering the MAAC Championships as the four-seed last season, where they fell to Quinnipiac 4-0. The Hawks and Broncs received 11 and 10 points respectively.
