Stella Johnson Named Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Co-Player of the Week
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Junior guard Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) of the Rider University women's basketball team continued to rack up the weekly accolades on Tuesday morning. A day after being tabbed as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week, Johnson was recognized by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as the Division I Co-Player of the Week.
Johnson becomes the first player in the MAAC to earn the distinction this season and the first Bronc to garner the accolade since Robin Perkins in December of 2016. Stella was also named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week on Monday evening for the third time this season.
Stella Johnson played all 40 minutes and tied a career-high with 35 points as Rider erased a 14-point deficit to defeat Fairfield in conference play last week. Johnson shot 13-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range for the Broncs. She dished out five assists to go along with four rebounds and one steal. It marked her second career MAAC game with over 30 points. She currently leads the MAAC in scoring (20.2 PPG) and steals (3.3 SPG).
Johnson is building quite the résumé this year as she was named the College Sports Madness National Division I Player of the Week back in November.
Rider returns to action on Thursday, January 10, with a road MAAC showdown with hOURglass rival Monmouth that is slated to being at 11:30 am in West Long Branch. The Broncs are looking to avenge a 63-56 setback to the Hawks last season on the road.
