Iona Alumni Rosie Clarke & Leonard Korir Race At IAAF World Athletics Championships

DOHA, QATAR – Iona College had two cross country/track and field alumni representing at the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Rosie Clarke '14, '15 MBA represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In an event that contained 45 athletes and 26 different countries, Clarke raced in the third heat and placed 12th with a time of 9:49.18. Her time was 34th fastest among the international athletes that set laced up.

While attending Iona, Clarke was a two-time All-American, placing fourth in the indoor mile at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and 13th in the 1,500-meter at the 2015 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Leonard Korir '12 represented the United States of America in the 10,000-meter final race. Korir finished 13th among the 26 athletes, representing 13 countries, competing in the race. He crossed the finish line in 28:05.73.

The winner of the 10K race was Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda. He crossed the finish line in a world leading 26:48.36.

Korir was Iona's first ever NCAA Champion, accomplishing the feat twice in 2011 in the indoor 5,000-meter and outdoor 10,000-meter events and was an eight-time NCAA All-American. He also competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, as the Maroon & Gold's first ever American Olympian.
