EDISON, N.J. (Nov. 10, 2019) – No. 3 Iona and No. 4 Marist advance to the semifinals of the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Soccer Championship.

2019 Men's Soccer Championship – First Round

Key Moments:
  • Esad Mackic scored first for the Gaels in the 29th minute, good for his fifth goal of the season.
  • Junior Josh Plimpton tacked on another Iona goal late in the first half, which proved to be the difference maker in the 2-1 victory.
  • Rider's Francisco Gomez Olano struck back less than a minute later with his own goal.
  • Iona took the 2-1 lead into the half and carried it through the scoreless second half.
Notables:
  • Iona avenged its regular season loss to Rider, which the Broncs took by a score of 2-1 (2OT).
  • The Gaels snapped a six-game losing streak against the Broncs.
  • Iona held the Broncs to a season-low six shots on goal.
  • With the loss, Rider will miss the MAAC Championship Game for the first time since 2014. The reigning MAAC Champions won three times (2015, 2016, 2018) in that span.

The Gaels will take on the second-seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats on Thursday, Nov. 14 in Hamden, Connecticut. The semifinal matchup will be televised on ESPN+.

  • A scoreless first half featured two of the league's top goalkeepers in Marist's Samuel Ilin and Manhattan's Marcellin Gohier.
  • Marist struck first with a goal from Allen Gavilanes in the 56th minute.
  • Justin Jaime added another goal for the Red Foxes with the assist from Gavilanes.
  • Manhattan got on the board with a goal from Brandon Joseph-Buadi to cut Marist's lead to 2-1.
Notables:
  • Marist moves to 2-0 on the season versus the Jaspers, with the first win coming on Oct. 19.
  • The Red Foxes will make their second-straight semifinal appearance.
  • Marist now leads the all-time series 17-10-2.
  • With tonight's assist, Gavilanes now holds the program record for assists.

The Red Foxes will travel to Jersey City for a meeting with top-seeded Saint Peter's on Thursday, Nov. 14.  The game will be televised on ESPN+.
 
The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 17 at the highest remaining seed.
