MAAC Teams Perform at NCAA Cross Country Regional Races

EDISON, N.J. (Nov. 15, 2019) – 10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) teams competed in the NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships today at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the Northeast Regional in Buffalo, New York.
 
At the 2019 NCAA DI Northeast Region Cross Country Championships, Iona College had a strong performance with two individuals, John Millar with a seventh-place finish with a time of 29:02.0 in the men’s 10k and Egle Morenaite with a fifth-place finish with a time of 19:34.2 in the women’s 6k, securing a spot in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship on Nov. 23 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
 
On the men’s side, Iona led the MAAC with a third-place finish with a team score of 96. Marist College finished 17th with a team score of 441. Siena College finished 25th with a score of 662, Canisius College finished 27th with a score of 723, Quinnipiac University finished 30th with a score of 894, Fairfield University finished 34th with a score of 987, and Niagara University finished 37th with a score of 1167.
 
On the women’s side, Iona College finished seventh with a team score of 233. Marist College finished 12th with a score of 338, Quinnipiac University finished 21st with a score of 591, Siena College placed 25th with a score of 639, Fairfield University placed 33rd with a score of 935, Niagara University finished 35th with a score of 986, and Canisius College finished 36th with a score of 1045.

At the 2019 NCAA DI Mid-Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships, Monmouth University and Rider University had a close battle resulting in an adjacent finish on the women’s side and a tied score in the men’s race.
 
Monmouth finished 20th in the women’s 6k race with a team score of 585. Rider followed shortly with a 21st finish with a team score of 588.
 
Both schools finished with a team score of 490, but Monmouth prevailed in the tiebreaker with four of its athletes outscoring the Broncs’ second-to-fifth man with an average 10k time of 32:40. Rider averaged a 10k time of 32:46.

To qualify for the 2019 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships, the follow requirements must be met:
  • 31 teams (made up of 5-7 participants) will make the field
  • 18 will automatically qualify by finishing as one of the top-two teams in any of the nine regional races
  • 13 will receive at-large bids
  • 38 individuals per gender will make the field
  • 36 will automatically qualify by being one of the top four regional finishers not on an advancing team
  • 2 individuals will receive at-large bids
