Iona Wins 2019 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship
Jersey City, N.J. (Nov. 17, 2019) – Iona College defeated Saint Peter’s University 3-2 (OT) to secure the 2019 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. The Gaels went 6-3-1 in conference play before outlasting No. 2 Quinnipiac University and No. 1 Saint Peter’s in pursuit of the MAAC title.

Key Moments:
- After a quiet start on the offensive end, the game was tied 0-0 at the half.
- Jordan Jowers struck first in the 49th minute to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead.
- Offensive Player of the Year Dominic Laws tacked on another goal less than 10 minutes later to give Saint Peter’s a convincing 2-0 lead.
- Iona’s Mauro Bravo answered back in the 73rd minute, scoring on a penalty kick to cut Saint Peter’s lead in half.
- Josh Plimpton added a goal of his own two minutes later to tie the game for the Gaels at 2-2. A champion could not be decided in regulation.
- With less than 15 seconds left in the overtime period, Mauro Bravo scored the golden goal to give Iona the 3-2 victory.
Notables:
- After winning its first MAAC Championship, Iona is set to make the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
- Today marked Iona’s third appearance in the MAAC Championship Game (1995, 2010, 2019).
- The last time the No. 3 seed came out of the MAAC Championship victorious was in 2012 when No. 3 Niagara accomplished the feat.
- The Gaels were picked to finish sixth in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The last team voted into the sixth slot that went on to win the MAAC title was the 2013 Quinnipiac squad.
