Canisius Sweeps Pepsi Zero MAAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards

Malik Johnson, Canisius

Canisius senior guard Malik Johnson averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game last week as the Golden Griffins went 1-1 in two non-league games. In the Griffs' 83-81 win over Bucknell Nov. 16, the Richmond, Va., native scored a career-high 27 points to go along with a game-high six assists and four steals. His final assist of the night came with 0.8 seconds left to play on Canisius' game-winning basket, and his four steals in the win over Bucknell moved him into 10th place all-time on the school's career steals chart.
Rookie of the Week
Jacco Fritz, Canisius

Canisius freshman Jacco Fritz averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game last week as the Golden Griffins went 1-1 in games against Albany and Bucknell. In the 83-81 win over Bucknell on Nov. 16, Fritz scored 12 points, highlighted by the game-winning lay-up with 0.8 seconds left to play to give Canisius its first win of the season. Fritz’s six rebounds in the loss at Albany on Nov. 13 made him the first Canisius freshman since 2007-08 to record five-or-more rebounds in each of his first two career games as a Griff.
