2019 MAAC Volleyball Championship – Semifinals

Top seeded Fairfield University (23-5, 17-1 MAAC) defeated fourth seeded Marist College (15-15, 12-6) three sets to two in comeback fashion to advance to the 2019 MAAC Volleyball Championship Game. The Stags fell behind after the first two sets, taking the next three to win the match. Fairfield will compete for a MAAC record 11th title tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
 
Fairfield Notes
  • Fairfield took the third set 25-22 after falling behind 2-0. The third set featured 11 ties and four lead changes.
  • The Stags took set four in dominant fashion, 25-14, forcing a fifth and final set.
  • Fairfield put the game away with a 15-11 fifth set win. 2019 MAAC Volleyball Player of the Year Manuela Nicolini sent the Stags to the 2019 MAAC Championship Game with the final kill.
  • Nicolini, also the 2019 MAAC Volleyball Setter of the Year, finished with 53 assists.
  • Mayda Garcia led the charge for the Stags, earning a double-double on 21 kills and 13 digs.
  • The Stags finished with 69 digs, 11.0 blocks, 61 kills, and seven service aces.
 Marist Notes
  • Marist came out strong, winning a highly contested first set 25-20. Megan Fergus led the way with seven kills in the set, Nikki DeSerpa followed with six.
  • Courtney Kasperski sealed the second set for the Red Foxes, picking up a service ace on the final point to take the set 25-17.
  • The Red Foxes forced six ties and five lead changes in the fifth and final set.
  • Fergus finished with 28 kills and 11 digs, securing a double-double. Fergus also finished with a .359 hitting percentage and .438 kill percentage.
  • Sophia Theriot led all players with 26 digs.
  • The Red Foxes finished with 60 kills, 70 digs, 10.0 blocks, and eight service aces.
 Quinnipiac University – 3 | Canisius College – 2
2019 MAAC Volleyball Championship – Semifinals

No. 6 Quinnipiac University (14-15, 8-10 MAAC) held off No. 2 Canisius College (15-16, 12-6) 3-2 to advance to Sunday’s MAAC Volleyball Championship Game. After winning the first two sets and dropping the following two, the Bobcats were able to fend off the Golden Griffins in the decisive fifth set. Quinnipiac will make only its second MAAC Volleyball Championship Game appearance, having last made it in 2016. The Bobcats will face Fairfield this year, in what will be a rematch of the 2016 championship, at 2:00 p.m.
 
Quinnipiac Notes
  • Quinnipiac took the early lead with a 25-23 first set win. Olga Zampati finished the set with eight kills and three digs.
  • The Bobcats didn’t slow down, taking the second set convincingly, 25-15.
  • After falling behind 3-0 to start the fifth set, the Bobcats bounced back to score six-straight. Quinnipiac would not give up the lead the rest of the set, winning 15-12. Morgan Sherwin recorded the kill that sent Quinnipiac to the final.
  • Zampati finished with a double-double on 24 kills and 13 digs, also collecting three service aces.
  • 2019 MAAC Libero of the Year Alejandra Rodriguez finished with 26 digs, leading the Bobcats.
  • Aryanah Diaz and Nicole Migliozzi let Quinnipiac in assists with 26 and 24, respectively.  
 Canisius Notes
  • The Golden Griffins battled back to take the third set of the match 25-18.
  • Canisius forced a fifth and final set by winning the fourth 25-20.
  • Leading the Griffs in kills were Camila Vazquez (13), Ella Loussia (12), and Hannah Nelson (12). Nelson also recorded 13 digs for a double-double.
  • Cassidy Ceriani led all players with 41 assists.
  • Bree long led all players with 37 digs.
