MAAC Pepsi Zero Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards go to Rider’s Johnson and Manhattan’s LaPointe
Player of the Week
Stella Johnson, Rider
Sr., Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic
Senior guard Stella Johnson was outstanding for the Broncs last weekend at the MAAC/ASUN Challenge. Stella averaged 40 points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block per game as Rider went 1-1 against Lipscomb and North Florida. For her play, she was honored as the MAAC/ASUN Challenge MVP. Stella set a program single-game scoring record with 41 points in a victory over Lipscomb. In the victory, she also had three steals and two blocks. She followed that up with 39 points versus North Florida. Over the weekend, she shot over 43 percent (21-of-48) from the field, 42 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range and 91 percent (32-of-35) from the foul line. Stella currently leads the country in scoring with 30.8 points per game and made free throws with 57. Johnson has won all three MAAC Player of the Week awards to start the season.
Rookie of the Week
Emily LaPointe, Manhattan
Fr., Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Academy
LaPointe scored a career-high 18 points at Villanova Thursday, November 21, leading the Jasper offense in a 63-51 loss to the Big East foe. LaPointe went 6-14 from the floor and 3-7 from three in her first collegiate start, finishing the game with nearly 43 percent shooting. She scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Jaspers cut the Villanova lead to four with 4:35 to play. She also committed just one turnover in 33 minutes of play.
