2019 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship – First Round

No. 5 Quinnipiac University (9-7-1, 5-4-1 MAAC) scored three unanswered goals in a second half comeback to defeat No. 4 Marist College (8-9-1, 5-4-1) by a score of 3-2. The Bobcats evened the season series after falling to the Red Foxes in the regular season, a game that ended up being the deciding factor in Marist claiming the No. 4 seed and Quinnipiac grabbing the No. 5 seed in this year’s championship. Quinnipiac will move on to face second-seeded Fairfield University (10-5-3, 7-2-1) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Fairfield, Connecticut. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
Quinnipiac Notes
- Rookie goalkeeper Meaghan Phillips started in net for the Bobcats. Phillips had five shutouts with a 0.88 GAA in the regular season.
- The Bobcats controlled the start of the game, recording two shots within the first five minutes.
- Though no goals were scored, the Bobcats offense was busy in the first half, recording seven shots with six on goal. Quinnipiac finished with 15 shots, 11 on goal.
- Selena Salas cut the Marist lead in half just 14 seconds after falling behind by two, scoring Quinnipiac’s first goal of the 2019 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship.
- Salas picked up her second goal of the day late at 76:02 to tie the game.
- The Bobcats finished with their third-straight goal in the 84th minute, taking the lead off a goal from Gretchen Kron.
- Ally Grunstein finished the game with two assists.
Marist Notes
- Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner started the game for the Red Foxes. Kelchner started in 10 games during the regular season, picking up five wins and recording 74 saves.
- Kelchner was forced to go to work early, posting two saves before the five-minute mark. Kelchner would go on to make six saves in the first half, with eight total throughout the day.
- Victoria Colatosti scored the first goal of the 2019 Women’s Soccer Championship, putting the Red Foxes ahead 1-0 at the 32:18 mark.
- Colatosti picked up her second goal of the afternoon at the 65:13 mark to put the Red Foxes up 2-0. Samantha Sturno assisted on the goal.

No. 6 Niagara University (8-7-2, 4-5-1) upset No. 3 Rider University (8-5-4, 5-3-2) by a final score of 2-1 to reach the Semifinals of the 2019 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship. Niagara was propelled by Kelsey Araujo, who tallied both goals for the Purple Eagles in the win. The Purple Eagles will move on to face top seeded Monmouth University (12-2-2, 10-0) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
Rider Notes
- Carmen Carbonell started in net for the Broncs. Carbonell had six shutouts throughout the regular season, making 93 saves with a 1.28 GAA.
- Rider was shut out in the first half of the game, registering six shots.
- Ailis Martin tied the game for the Broncs just 33 seconds into the second half to tie the game at one goal apiece. Lindsey Maslow was credited with an assist on the goal.
- The Broncs posted 14 shots, 11 coming in the second half, but only three were credited on net.
Niagara Notes
- Junior goalkeeper Sabrina Locas served as the netminder for the Purple Eagles. Locas posted seven shutouts with 71 saves and a 1.13 GAA in her first year with the team.
- Kelsey Araujo scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute to vault the Purple Eagles out to a 1-0 lead.
- Araujo once again found the back of the net for Niagara in the 68th minute to take a late 2-1 lead.
- Niagara was held to only three shots in the second half.
- Locas made two saves while collecting the win.
- Annie Ibey and Mackenzie Mix both tallied assists in the win.
