Iona Cross Country Shows Out At 2019 European Championships

Gaels have two runners finish in top 25 of respective races

LIBSON, PORTUGAL – Current and former members of the Iona College men's and women's cross country programs participated in the 2019 European Cross Country Championships over the weekend at Bela Vista Park.

Jack O'Leary competed in the U23 8,225-meter men's championship race and placed 25th out of 81 runners that finished the race with a time of 25:30.02. He was the second member of the Ireland team to complete the race. John Millar also ran in the U23 race for Great Britain but didn't finish the race.

Egle Morenaite represented Lithuania competing in the U23 6,225-meter women's championship event and placed 20th out of 58 competitors crossing the the finish line in 22:13.82. She was the top finisher amongst her Lithuanian teammates.

In the women's senior championship race, Kate Avery placed 30th in the 8,225-meter out of 53 runners. She crossed the finish line in in 29:22.27 representing Great Britain. She and her teammates won the gold medal.

Johannes Motschmann raced for Germany in the in the men's 10,225-meter senior championship race and placed 48th out of 82. He crossed the finish line in 32:23.85, which was the third best time of the German team.
