ESPN Announces MAAC Wildcard Game for February 22
EDISON, NJ – ESPN has announced that Canisius College at Monmouth University on Friday, February 22 in West Long Branch, NJ will air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. on ESPNU as part of the MAAC Wildcard Game package.
Canisius (8-12, 5-3 MAAC) and Monmouth (7-16, 6-4 MAAC) have met once already this season—January 24. Canisius took that contest 80-66 up in Buffalo, NY.
Last time out for Canisius was a loss at Niagara University, which was the Golden Griffins’ first road loss in MAAC play this season. The Golden Griffins take on Quinnipiac on Friday evening. The winner will be in sole possession of second place in the MAAC. Sophomore Takal Molson, the reigning Rookie of the Year, leads the Golden Griffins in scoring at 16.4, which is fifth in the MAAC. Isaiah Reese is the team leader in rebounding (5.9) and assists (4.4).
Monmouth beat Siena College on Thursday night at home in West Long Branch. The Hawks of Monmouth face first-place Rider University on Saturday. Ray Salnave and Deion Hammond average double figures for the Hawks at 12.6 and 12.5 points respectively. In league play, Hammond is eighth in the MAAC at 15.5 points a game. As a team, the Hawks lead the MAAC in field goal percentage defense during league play at 42.2-percent.
The wildcard format allows ESPN to pick any game scheduled for that specific date to air on ESPNU and allows the MAAC and ESPN the flexibility to showcase the best matchups as the season progresses.
In 2019, the MAAC Basketball Championships will be at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY on March 7-11. The men’s basketball championship semifinals will air on ESPN3 and ESPNU.
