Rider Men and Fairfield Women Extend Their Leads Heading Into Final Day of 2019 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships

BUFFALO, NY – At the end of the third day of the 2019 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships, the Rider University men’s program has increased its point total to 546, while the Fairfield University women have tallied 509 points.

Day 3 Highlights
  • For the fourth year in a row, Luke Musselman of Rider took home gold in the Men’s 400 Individual Medley with a mark of 3:51.42. Rider men collected nine Top-3 finishes through seven events on the day, including first and third place in the Men’s 3M Dive.
  • Bryant University’s Micah Ornelas broke the MAAC Men’s 100 Butterfly record in the preliminary round with a time of 46.70. Ornelas went on to win gold in the event finals with a time of 46.80. Both times qualify him for a NCAA B cut. It is the second record broken by Ornelas in two days.
  • The Bulldogs’ 400 Medley Relay team, comprised of Tavish Boyle, Matthew Mays, Micah Ornelas, and Matt Zichelli broke the MAAC record in the event with a time of 3:13.39. This mark was nearly three seconds faster than the MAAC record set by Bryant in 2018.
  • Rider’s Justin Carey’s leadoff swim of 47.35 in the Men’s 400 Medley Relay is a new MAAC record for the 100 Backstroke.
  • Fairfield sophomore, Morgan Hansen, broke the MAAC Women’s 100 Butterfly record with a mark of 55.38, securing the gold medal for the Stags.
  • Sarah Herbold from Fairfield won her first individual gold of her collegiate career, placing first in the Women’s 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:51.77.
  • Hayley Tasselmyer of Niagara took first in the Women’s 100 Breaststroke after finishing in 12th in the 2018 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships.
  • Rookie swimmer Kayla May touched first in the Women’s 100 Backstroke with a mark of 55.77. A total of four Broncs finished in the top-eight as May was followed by Taylor Stalnaker, Maeve Lersch, and Olivia Cann.
  • The Stags’ 400 Medley Relay team of Kelly Cordes, Colleen Young, Hansen, and Herbold marks the programs third relay victory of the championship after winning both the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay on the first night of competition.
