Monmouth Men and Rider Women Lead After Day One of MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

NEW YORK, NY – At the end of the first day of the 2019 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Monmouth University men and Rider University women find themselves atop the standings with 79.5 and 69 points respectively.

Seventeen student-athletes, competing in 11 different events, were crowned MAAC Champions on day one. Seven Monmouth athletes were able to grab victory in four events; Patrice Baston winning the women’s long jump, Khalid Slocum winning the men’s long jump, Tim Van Cauwenberge winning the men’s high jump, and Amber Stratz, Chandi Piiry, Brianna Stratz, and Allie Wilson winning the women’s distance medley relay.
Four Rider athletes were also crowed MAAC Champions. Ashley Berry won the women’s weight throw, Matthew Kraemer won the men’s weight throw, Daniella Izzo won the women’s pole vault, and Sara Gardner won the women’s high jump. Marist College’s Christopher Tibbetts, Josh Hindle, Brian Henderson, and James Moehringer, were able to walk away as champions in the men’s distance medley.
Iona College claimed both 5000m titles with Jessica Scheriff on the women’s side and Jordan Brannan on the men’s side.

Day 1 Highlights
  • Iona’s Jessica Scheriff was able to grab the women’s 5000 title with a time of 16:55.41, which was over 16 seconds faster than that of the second-place finisher.
  • The Marist men’s distance medley team was able to grab the lead in the late stages of the event. Marist was followed by Monmouth and Siena, all of whom were within four seconds of one another.
  • Ashley Berry from Rider won the women’s weight throw with a distance of 17.6m, 0.66m farther than that of the second-place finisher.
  • Monmouth’s Allie Wilson, who came into the weekend with the fastest 800m time in the NCAA, was a part of the first-place women’s medley team and had the second-fastest preliminary time in the mile at 4:56.93.
  • Monmouth was the only school to claim two victories on the men’s side, claiming both the high jump and long jump. The other men’s events were claimed by Iona, Marist, and Rider. Rider led the way on the women’s side with three victories in the weight throw, pole vault, and high jump. Two women’s events were claimed by Monmouth, and one was claimed by Iona.
  • The women’s pole vault was forced to go to a jump off between Rider’s Daniella Izzo and Monmouth’s Lauren Saifi. Izzo posted a 3.50m jump to take the victory.
